- Iron gall rather than dye alone, so the writing sinks into the paper's structure instead of sitting on it
- Waterproof and stable once it has bitten into the sheet

Worth knowing. KWZ says iron gall inks ask more care than a standard ink, particularly in a steel nib: rinse the pen more often and do not leave the ink sitting in it.
