How far does a small sample actually go?

People ask this twice. Once before ordering, meaning "is that enough to be worth it", and once with the vial actually in hand and the cap off, meaning "how careful do I have to be here".

Both are fair. The honest answer is that a small sample holds more writing than most people expect, and that the exact figure moves with your pen, your nib, your paper and your hand. So instead of a number, here is the arithmetic in parts, for whatever size of vial is in front of you.

Start with what your pen holds

A standard international converter, the twist-piston sort that fits most pens built for cartridges, holds somewhere around 0.6 to 0.8 ml filled properly. Filled the way people actually fill them, with an air bubble trapped at the top and the piston not quite bottomed out, call it 0.5 to 0.7 ml.

A short standard cartridge is in much the same territory, roughly 0.7 to 0.8 ml, and a long one is close to double that. A built-in piston filler is the greedy one: commonly 1.2 to 1.6 ml, sometimes more. An eyedropper pen, where the barrel itself is the reservoir, will happily take several millilitres and then decline to give any of them back.

The useful reframing is this: a small sample is not one fill. It is several converter fills, with some left in the vial to check the colour against later.

Now the pages

Ordinary handwriting on A5, prose rather than practice loops, uses somewhere around 0.03 to 0.10 ml a side. That bracket is wide because it has to be.

Multiply it out and one millilitre of ink covers roughly 10 to 30 sides of A5. A single converter fill of 0.7 ml lands somewhere between about seven and twenty-five sides. If that feels impossible for something you can hold in a teaspoon, consider what a written line actually is: a film a few microns thick laid over a few metres of stroke. The volume is genuinely tiny. Most of what you buy in a bottle is patience.

Why it is a range and not a number

Four variables, in roughly the order they matter.

Nib width. A broad lays a line perhaps twice as wide as a fine over the same words, and ink use tracks the area you cover, so a broad can drink two to three times what an extra-fine does writing the identical sentence. Stubs and flex nibs sit at the thirsty end of that.

Wetness. Two nibs ground the same width can meter very differently depending on the feed. A wet writer on a dry ink and a dry writer on a wet ink can end up in the same place, which is why nobody can give you a table.

Paper. Absorbent paper pulls ink down into the fibres, and a line that sinks needs more ink to read as a line at all. Well-sized paper keeps it on top where all of it is visible. Same pen, same sentence, meaningfully different totals. Happily, the page that is thriftier is also the page that shows you shading, so the ink you save buys you information.

Your handwriting. A small tidy hand against a large loose one is a factor of two on its own, before any of the above. It is also the reason your friend's page count will never be your page count.

The ink you never write with

Some of every fill never reaches paper. The feed and section hold a working volume you cannot write out, and when you flush the pen to move to the next colour, that goes down the sink. Budget roughly 0.1 to 0.2 ml per pen per colour as the cost of doing business.

You can lose more than that to filling technique. Dipping a converter into a shallow vial rarely submerges the nib deep enough to draw a full fill, and whatever coats the outside of the nib gets wiped off on a tissue. Better to draw the ink up with a blunt syringe and fill the converter directly, or decant into something narrow. If you only want to see the colour, a dip nib will show you a whole spread of it for a few drops.

Spend it on a real test

Which brings us to the point of the arithmetic. You have enough ink for several proper fills, so use them properly.

Write on the paper you actually write on. A well-sized test sheet tells you what the ink can do at its best, and your everyday notebook tells you what it will do on a Tuesday. You want both, and only one of them is a surprise.

Write real sentences. Swatch squiggles show you saturation and nothing else. Sentences show you flow, dry time, whether the colour is legible at your size, and whether you can stand to look at it for a page. Copy a paragraph out of whatever is nearby. Write a shopping list. It does not matter, as long as it looks like your writing.

Then put a dated line at the top: the date, the pen, the nib, the paper. It takes eight seconds and it turns a loose page into evidence. Come back in a week and again in a month, because inks darken, some shift, and your first impression under one lamp is not a verdict.

That is the bit before the bottle. Small stakes, a proper test, and a page you can still make sense of a month later.
