Same ink, different paper. What just happened?

You fill a pen on Sunday and write a line at your desk. It comes out grey-green and slightly moody, pooling darker at the end of every stroke, and you think: right, this is the one. On Wednesday you write the same words in the notebook that lives in your bag, and the colour is flatter, bluer and a bit fuzzy at the edges. Same pen. Same ink. Same handwriting, give or take the Wednesday.

Nobody swapped your bottle while you slept. The paper is doing this, it does it to everyone, and once you know how, you stop blaming the ink.

Paper is a sponge with good manners

Paper is a mat of cellulose fibres with air in between. Left to itself it drinks: it pulls liquid down into the sheet and sideways along the fibres, which is why ink on a napkin turns into a blot the size of a coin instead of staying where you put it.

So papermakers add sizing. Starch, gelatine or a synthetic agent goes either into the pulp or onto the finished surface, and it makes the fibres less thirsty so that liquid sits on top for a while rather than vanishing into the sheet. How much sizing a page carries, and whether it sits through the pulp or on the surface, is the single biggest reason two sheets can treat one ink so differently. Coating and surface texture matter as well, but sizing does most of the work.

A lightly sized sheet takes ink straight in. It dries quickly, reads matte, and the colour comes out lighter, because a good part of the dye has been carried below the surface where your eye cannot follow it. A heavily sized sheet holds the ink up on top and makes it dry slowly, and that slowness is exactly what the ink needs to do the interesting things.

What ink does when the paper allows it

Shading is the light-and-dark variation across a stroke, and it exists because a wet line is not equally deep along its length. Ink gathers where the nib slowed down: at the end of a stroke, in the belly of a curve, wherever you paused to work out the next word. More liquid in that pool means more dye left behind once the water leaves, so the patch dries darker. On absorbent paper the pool soaks away before it can settle and the whole line dries at one flat value. Nothing was wrong with the ink. It simply never got a moment to itself.

Sheen is the metallic flash that appears when you tilt the page. It happens when a heavily saturated ink dries with more dye than the surface can take in and leaves a thin film sitting on top, which reflects light at an angle. It needs low absorbency almost by definition, so a thirsty sheet will essentially never sheen, no matter how good the colour looked in somebody else's photograph.

Both effects want ink on the page in quantity, which is why the same bottle shows more of itself through a wet pen or a wide nib than through a fine, dry one. Three variables, one line of writing. This is roughly where the rabbit hole starts.

And what it does to spite you

Feathering is the whiskery, spidery edge on a stroke: ink creeping outwards along the fibres before it can dry. It turns up when the sheet is under-sized for the ink you are using, and a wet ink or a broad nib makes it worse simply by delivering more liquid to creep with. A fine nib can stay crisp on the very same page, which is why "this ink feathers" is only ever half a sentence.

Bleed-through is the same thirst pointed downwards: ink travels through the sheet and turns up on the back. It is a relative of feathering rather than the same problem, and the two do not track each other neatly. A thin but well sized sheet can hold a sharp line and still let a shadow show through, while a thicker, thirstier one can stay opaque on the back and blur every stroke on the front.

Dry time is the bill for all the good behaviour. The paper that gives you the best shading is the paper that will still be damp when the side of your hand comes across it. You can have a fast, clean, matte line or a slow, pooling, dramatic one, and no sheet gives you both at once.

One more thing, easy to forget: paper is rarely actually white. A cream or ivory sheet sits under the ink like a warm filter and nudges a colour towards yellow and green, while a bright white sheet full of optical brighteners makes the same ink read cooler and higher in contrast. Fountain pen ink is more transparent than it looks, so whatever is underneath is part of the colour you see.

Which is the point of the bit before the bottle

Test on the paper you actually write on. A swatch on a shop's test card shows you an ink at its most flattering, on a sheet chosen to flatter it. Your own notebook shows you what the ink is like on a Tuesday afternoon, which is where you and it will be spending most of your time together.

Better still, write the same line twice, once on the good paper and once on the everyday paper, and keep the two where you can see them side by side. The distance between those two lines is the honest description of that ink, and it is a distance no photograph on any website can show you, ours very much included.
