Your ink has shading. Your pen is hiding it.

Someone shows you a colour. In their photo the stroke swings from pale teal at the top to something nearly black where the pen turned a corner, and there is a red glint along the downstrokes that has no business being in a teal ink. So you try it. You write a line. You get teal. Flat, even, perfectly pleasant teal.

Nobody lied to you. Shading and sheen are not properties an ink has the way it has a colour. They are things an ink does, under conditions, and most of those conditions are set by the pen in your hand and the way you move it.

Shading is uneven drying, and nothing more romantic than that

An ink is dye dissolved in a lot of water. When you write, you lay a wet line on the page, and that line is not the same depth everywhere. It pools where the nib slowed, at the end of a stroke, in the belly of a curve, at the join where you changed direction. Then the water leaves and the dye stays. Where the puddle was deeper, more dye is left behind on the same patch of paper, so that patch dries darker.

That is the entire mechanism. Shading is a map of where your line was deep and where it was thin, drawn for you after the fact. Some inks show it more readily because their dye concentration sits in the range where the difference is visible: an ink that is already near-black everywhere has nowhere darker to go, and a very pale one may not have enough dye to make the contrast register. But no ink shades by itself. It needs a line with variation in it, and a line is something you make.

Sheen is excess dye that never got absorbed

Sheen is a different effect wearing similar clothes. When a heavily saturated ink dries on a surface that cannot take all of it in, some dye is left sitting on top as a thin film. Light striking that film at a low angle reflects back, often in a colour with no obvious relationship to the ink underneath. Red over blue-black, gold over green, that sort of party trick.

Two conditions, both required: enough dye to leave a surplus, and a surface unwilling to absorb it. High saturation, low absorbency. Which makes sheen far pickier than shading. Plenty of excellent shading inks will never sheen at all, and that is not a fault in them. It is a different lever.

Why your hand may be showing you neither

Both effects scale with one thing: how much ink ends up on the paper. Shading needs pools deep enough to differ from the rest of the stroke. Sheen needs a surplus that has nowhere to go. If your line is narrow, quick and only just wet enough to read, there is no depth and no surplus, so there is nothing to see. The ink is not underperforming. It is being asked a question it can only answer in one word.

The five things you can actually change

Nib width. A broader nib lays a wider and wetter line, and a wider line has more room to pool unevenly across it. This is the biggest lever most people have. An ink that reads flat in an extra fine can be a different colour entirely in a broad, and stubs do better still, because they build thick and thin sections into every letter whether you intended them or not.

How wet the pen writes. Two pens of the same nominal width can put down visibly different amounts of ink, depending on the feed and the gap between the tines. A dry writer starves the line and flattens everything. If you own a pen you have always thought a bit too generous, that is the one to test with.

Writing speed. A fast stroke lays down less ink and gives it less time to settle before it dries. Slowing down puts more ink on the page and keeps it wet longer, and wet-and-sitting-there is precisely the window in which both effects happen.

Letter size. Small writing is short strokes with turns crowded together, and the two wet edges of the line are never far apart. Write large and each stroke becomes a longer channel with room to vary along its length. Notebook-sized handwriting hides shading; a signature shows off.

Paper. Briefly, because it has its own article: an absorbent sheet pulls the ink below the surface before any of this can happen, and sheen in particular is close to impossible on a thirsty page.

A test worth one sheet of paper

Take one sample and write the same short sentence four ways on the same page: fast and small, slow and small, fast and large, slow and large. Let it dry properly. Then tilt the sheet towards a window and look along it rather than down at it, because sheen only exists at an angle.

If all four lines look the same, that ink is not a shader in that pen, and no amount of wanting will change it. If the slow, large line does something the others do not, you have learned something more useful than whether you like the colour. You have learned what you would have to do to get it.

Which is a reasonable thing to find out from a tiny vial, rather than from a full bottle and a slowly dawning sense of disappointment.
